Curriculum

Level 1

In a student’s first year of music lessons, we focus on basic skills such as tone production, fingerings, and reading music notation. I use the Essential Elements method book series, but I’m happy to use whatever book your student may use at school.

•  Essential Elements, Book 1

Level 2

•  Essential Elements, Book 2
•  Major scales and thirds up to 4 sharps or flats
•  Chromatic scale, one octave
•  Additional books – Students may choose from among the following:
◊  Festival Ensembles, Books 1 and 2 (Standard of Excellence/Kjos)
     ◊  Selected Duets (Rubank/Hal Leonard)
◊  Essential Elements Movie Favorites/Film Favorites

Level 3

At this level, emphasis is placed on quality of style and tone, not just ability to play notes as written.

Solo pieces may be rehearsed for several weeks at a time. Students will not simply move from page to page in a book, but rather spend time developing specific pieces of solo literature.

Students will practice with a metronome and learn to use a tuner.

In the second or third year, saxophone students often learn jazz styles and improvisation.

•  Rubank Intermediate Method
